Goddess Of Joy

We’re going to talk about a subject that is so dear to my heart and I believe we could all use more of, and that is joy. I don’t know if you know this. I wrote a book a couple of years ago called 100 Ways to Be in Joy. You can get it on Amazon if you’d like to check it out. I want to share what caused me to write the book and see if this is something that will resonate with you as well. Here I am coaching people and asking a very simple question when I’m trying to find out what areas of their lives are in alignment and what areas of their lives are out of alignment and need improvement.

The question that I’m asking is, what are three ways that you in joy? What are three things that you do to bring joy into your life? At the other end of the phone, it’s crickets. Nobody is telling me anything. I’m thinking to myself, “Really? You don’t have a single way?” This is such a dearth of what, for me, feels like it could be obvious, easy, or simple. These are people who are saying to me everything from, “I don’t remember the last time I felt joy.” The one that broke my heart the most was, “Not that I’m aware of. I’ve never felt joy.” Most people are saying, “I know I want more joy, but I don’t know how to get.” That has been such a gift to me to help bring more joy in and to help you acknowledge and recognize what is possible for you when you start focusing on joy as a spiritual practice.

Remember, I talk all the time about the idea of working out at the spiritual gym. What I mean when I say that is that you are going to make the same choices about what are you going to do to work out your relationship with spirit every morning, the way that you work out your relationship with your body every morning. You’re connecting to your body physically by going out for a walk, lifting weights, or doing yoga. We know to do that but so many times, we neglect our own ability to work those spiritual muscles as well.

That’s the invitation when I talk about working out at the spiritual gym. I feel like when it comes to joy, that is the absolute key. The key to having a great experience with your higher self, your higher power, whatever God is for you, is being in joy. That’s what we’re going to talk about. There are so many ways to bring more joy into your life. One of the simplest ways is by asking yourself, “What did you love to do as a child?” What was it that you liked to do? That was probably very simple and maybe it didn’t cost very much.

One of my favorite things these days is I have a set of jacks. I bought them when I started doing this work. I didn’t always have them. I remembered when I was a kid, I used to love playing jacks. it’s the little tiny metal, six-pointed pieces, you throw them down, and you bounce a rubber ball. You have to collect them before you catch the ball again on one bounce. They sit on my altar. I will just throw them down on the floor of my office and start bouncing. The most rounds I could do is 1, 2, or 3. Trying to collect jacks on groups of four, I start to get wobbly and usually lose the game at that point, but who cares? I’m connecting to that little girl in me who felt so much joy and was so grateful to be doing these simple activities.

A lot of times, when I talked to clients, their little girl or their little boy wants to go out for ice cream. Do you remember when you were a kid, you got taken out for ice cream when you did something good or you got taken out for some treat? At least most of us did. We have to be careful because if your food is a trigger for you, you don’t want to associate food with rewarding yourself because that can set up something that’s dangerous for you. You decide what’s right.

I struggled with weight issues for most of my life. It’s been such a joy to give that up in favor of what does my body desire. What am I craving right now? I’m staying at the Hard Rock and they have an ice cream place downstairs that has boozy ice cream, another one of my favorite things. I’m going to reward myself when I get finished with filming with boozy ice cream. That will be my lunch because that’s what I desire. I don’t have to have lunch. I might save it and have it as dinner or whatever. It’s a choice and everything is a choice. The question is, are you moving closer to the things that bring you joy or further away from them? If for you, ice cream is joy, go for it. If it’s not, then do something else.

The point is you’re checking in with yourself. You’re asking yourself, “What do I desire and how can I have more of that?” When you choose what you desire and you move toward it, you are moving closer to the reasons that we have come to this planet. The other day, I met with somebody. It was my first hint of post-COVID because I was able to have an in-person meeting. It was a blind coffee date with a wonderful woman who’s also a coach. We met in-person and I drove about 40 minutes in traffic and I didn’t care. I was so happy to meet her. It was in a wonderful area of Miami called Brickell that has got built up since I moved to Miami. It’s lots of high rises but imagine if New York or Manhattan and a beach community had a baby, that would be the way that I feel about Brickell. When we finished with our coffee and our date, I was so happy to have met her and interacted with another coach. We were talking about the things that bring us joy with our clients and having a beautiful time.

As I was leaving, I saw a scooter. The scooter that is now available for rent in many major cities where it’s like a Lyft scooter or something. If you have a Lyft app on your phone, you just punch it in, you say that you’re going to rent the scooter, and it unlocks the scooter. It was about a block away from the water and I was walking, there were these two scooters parked right in the middle of the block almost blocking the sidewalk. If you’re going to rent a scooter, don’t do that. That’s rude. I rented one of these scooters because it was in my face.

These days, when something new comes along, I’m like, “Let me try it.” I’m going to see what the scooter experience is going to be like. I got on the scooter, which is an electric scooter, mind you. Once you start it, you’re working the handles, and your feet are both on the scooter. The scooter is moving of its own volition. I started to scream with happiness and joy. I’m riding down the street. There are all these high rises around me and I’m thinking, “People are going to be looking out of their windows thinking somebody being attacked in the street,” but I’m just whooping it up.

I started giggling and then I started laughing. I’m this middle-aged crazy lady driving down the street, giggling, and screaming at the top of her lungs as she rides what looks like a child’s vehicle. It did belong only to the realm of children before, but now, adults can have razor scooters, too. I drove. I got the hang of it and I rode past the Miami waterfront. I was only on the scooter for like fifteen minutes because I only needed to go around the block. I took the very long way around, but the joy, the sheer happiness in my heart to be able to be on this scooter and to feel the beautiful weather, the wind on my skin, and floating past my hair. My hair was streaming behind me and I didn’t care what it looked like. I was so filled with happiness.

I want this for you. I want this for everybody. I want this for each one of us. This is something that we get to have. We get to claim for ourselves all of the joy that is here for us. The goddess of us, to me, is joy. The goddess wants from us the joy. I talk about this all the time that creating, receiving, and allowing are the feminine principles. Structure and the doing are the masculine principles. For me, that receiving and allowing always brings joy. The goddess of joy is getting to be in alignment with those creative, feminine principles of receiving and allowing. Whenever I do that, there’s always so much more happiness in my heart. I want to encourage you to ask, what are the things that you could do to bring in more joy?

Another piece of this feminine principle for me has been being very single-minded, not multitasking. I love to listen to things. I’m getting into studying cryptocurrency right now, so I listen to my crypto coach, he doesn’t call himself that but that’s what I call him, as I’m cooking, for example. I cook for a long time, so I rarely even use a recipe anymore. The other day I was making dinner and I was using a recipe, listening to crypto in my ear, and I was going through this process very slowly. With such an enjoyment of being in the moment, being present, and allowing myself to do exactly what I wanted to.

Normally, there’s this driver with my clients. One of my very first clients ever had the driver. The driver is the thing that says, “You have to keep working. You have a deadline. There’s something coming up next.” She was one of the people that definitely needed more joy in her life. She had this so badly that she couldn’t take a vacation. She would get sick because if she took a vacation, her body was like, “Thank God,” and then it would immediately get sick. If she said, “I need a vacation.” She wouldn’t take a vacation. Her body would get sick and shut down because she wasn’t giving herself that time.

When you allow more joy into your life, you’re allowing the driver to have a rest. Again, that tends to bring more balanced masculine and feminine, sacred, and divine union into balance in your life. I want to encourage you to listen to yourself when it starts to feel like there’s too much of that driver because by bringing in more joy. You’re using joy as a spiritual principle to give you the balance with the driver if you’re one of those people like me who’s always deadline-oriented, goal-oriented, what’s my next this, and when’s my next that happening.

One of my beautiful coaches and mentors, Elizabeth Purvis, says, “I want it now or five minutes from now.” Those are two options. I love that. That is so me. However, I’m learning to be present with those moments, stretching the time out to allow whatever it is that I desire. When I was cooking, I’m being present. I’m cooking and listening at the same time without concern about the next thing that I had to do or where I had to go. It was so beautiful.

I’m probably making this up, but it feels like it makes the food taste better. The food isn’t being made with love. The food is being made with the intention of joy, love, and yes. It doesn’t matter what that principle is for you, whether it’s cooking, horseback riding, or riding your bike. I love to ride my bike. I have a beach cruiser. I don’t take it to the beach. I take it around the neighborhood. It’s yellow and it has no speeds on it. It has a basket. My girlfriend got it for me for Christmas a couple of years ago because I told her the story of how much joy riding a bike as a kid gave me and how for my 10th Christmas, my father and mother gave me a yellow three-speed with a woven basket on the front.

That Christmas that she gave me this beautiful beach cruiser, I thought my heart would burst with joy. Taking it out every day and being on that bike for 30 minutes, which I do about 3 or 5 days a week or five days a week if I can, it resets me completely. These are some ideas for you. The question I have for you is, what is your joy? What brings you joy? What ignites the goddess of joy within you? I’d love for you to comment whether it’s on YouTube or on one of the show. You’re welcome to connect with me online. My Facebook profile and my Instagram profile are both public. You can make comments. I’d love to get comments from you, even if we don’t know each other because bringing more joy into your life would make me so happy. Until next time, blessings. I would love to have you come back for more episodes of Your Goddess Awakened. See you next time.
