Walking the Labyrinth of Life

Walking the Labyrinth of Life

Do you know the difference between a maze and a labyrinth? A maze is designed to get you lost and has a bunch of dead ends, while a labyrinth is designed for a mindful, meditative experience that can help solve a problem as you become more contemplative.

On a tour to Costa Rica in June, I was in the world’s only double labyrinth, which is made entirely of cactus, a powerful energy conductor. It has multiple paths into two overlapping centers, built on top of two palpable energy vortexes. Despite the risk of cactus needles, I could feel that I needed to walk the whole labyrinth barefoot, and so I did. I even got lost a few times – it was so big I didn’t always know which way the path was curving, and I wasn’t sure if I’d make it to the center.

Here’s the thing about labyrinths – and life: All we truly have is our decisions, our trust, and the courage to put one foot in front of the other. Sounds simple, right? (A reminder that simple and easy are, for most of us, not the same thing).

Let’s take a deeper dive…

Our Decisions: In a labyrinth, every turn is a decision. Left or right? Forward or back? It’s the same in life. We’re constantly making choices, big and small. The key is not to get paralyzed by the fear of making the “wrong” choice. As I found out, there are no wrong turns in a labyrinth – just different paths to the center.

Trust: This is the biggie. As you wind your way through a labyrinth, you have to trust the path. You can’t see the end, you don’t know what’s around the next corner, yet you trust that if you keep moving, you’ll reach your destination. Trusting the process, even when we can’t see the big picture, is often the difference between giving up and breaking through to achieve your desires.

Putting One Foot in Front of the Other: There is power in persistence. In a labyrinth, the only way out is through. You can’t jump over the walls or create a shortcut. You simply have to keep moving forward, one step at a time. Life’s challenges are often the same way. Big goals can seem overwhelming, yet when we break them down into small, manageable steps, suddenly the impossible becomes possible.

I remember reaching a point in my labyrinth walk where I felt completely lost. I could see the center, yet the path seemed to be taking me further away, not closer. I was tempted to turn around, even to give up. yet I took a deep breath, trusted the path, and kept putting one foot in front of the other. And you know what? Those seemingly “wrong” turns were exactly what I needed to reach the center.

Once I was ready to leave, it was like a single door to the path appeared in front of me, even though there were multiple paths I could have chosen. I heard the question: Are you ready to die to your old self? And in the same moment, I also heard the answer: You already have. I immediately stepped through the doorway and onto the path, and made it back out without a single wrong turn.

Sometimes the detours, the setbacks, the moments when we feel furthest from our goals – those are the experiences shaping us, preparing us, leading us exactly where we need to go.

Here’s my challenge to you: Approach your life this week like a labyrinth walk. Choose a goal or challenge you’re facing, and apply these three principles:

Make decisions boldly, knowing there’s wisdom to be gained no matter which path you choose.

Trust the process, even when (especially when) you can’t see the end result.

Keep moving forward, one step at a time, one foot in front of the other. Progress, not perfection, is your goal.

Decide. Trust. Step forward. Repeat.

I’d love to hear about your “labyrinth walk” sometime this week. What decisions did you make? How did you maintain trust when things got tough? What small steps led to big progress? Drop me a line and share your journey. Your story might just be the inspiration someone else needs to keep walking their own path!

Love,

Halle
